National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted on behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC) for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility of Assistant Professorship, Junior Research Fellowship or both, for Indian Universities and Colleges.

Until June 2018, the NET was conducted by CBSE in 84 subjects at 91 cities across the country. Thereafter from December 2018 onwards, the UGC- NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Q. What is the eligibility criteria for UGC Net Commerce exam ?

  • General/Unreserved/General-EWS candidates - at least 55% marks in Master’s Degree.
  • OBC-NCL /SC/ST/PwD/Transgender candidates - at least 50% marks in Master’s degree.

Q. What are the career opportunities after clearing NET exam in commerce ?

  • You become eligible for the post of Assistant Professor. 
  • After Qualifying JRF, you can pursue PhD with monthly stipend of over Rs. 30,000 p.m.

Q. When is UGC Net commerce exam held ?

UGC-NET is conducted twice every year usually in the months of June and December. 

Q. Can a mediocre / average student qualify UGC Net commerce exam ?

You can do anything you wish to with proper guidance and hard work. The nature of exam is such that it seeks to test the analytical understanding of the students with objective MCQ questions. 

Q. What is the difference between NET and JRF exam ?

Qualifying NET means you are eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor. 

The candidates who qualify for the award of JRF are eligible to pursue research in the subject of their post-graduation or in a related subject.

Q. What is the validity period of JRF award letter ?

The validity period of the offer will be three years w.e.f. the date of issue of JRF Award Letter.

Q. I am in my final year of M.Com. Can I appear for UGC Net Commerce exam ?

Yes, but you must complete Master degree within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks.

Q. What is the syllabus of UGC Net Commerce ?

Its similar to what you studied in graduation and post-graduation.

Q. Is there any age limit as well to appear for this exam ?

There is no upper age limit in applying for UGC-NET for Assistant Professor.

However, if you wish to apply for JRF, then your age should not be more than 30 years.  A relaxation of upto 5 years is provided to the candidates belonging to OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/Transgender categories and to women applicants.  

Q. What is the cut-off for UGC Net Commerce ?

As a thumb-rule, for General Category, Cut-off for JRF in commerce is 65±3% and for NET in commerce is 58±3%. Cut-off for EWS, SC and ST category is slightly lower.

Q. What kind of questions are asked in UGC Net commerce exam ?

40% aggregate marks in both the papers taken together for General/EWS candidates

Ideally, studying for 6-8 hours a day over a period of 3-4 months is enough for preparation of UGC Net exam.
